Weddings:
Can I have my wedding in the church if we are not members?
Weddings celebrated in the church are understood as a covenant celebration uniting the man and woman in the presence, and with the blessing of, God. As such, it is assumed that couples wishing to be married in the church are active in the church and growing in discipleship. Non-members may celebrate their wedding in the church. The final decision rests with the pastor.
Baptisms:
Can I have my baby baptized at your church if I am not a member?
Baptism is administered during the Sunday worship service to infants, children, youth or adults. In infant Baptism, the parents and church family promise to raise the child in the knowledge and love of God. Therefore, we invite at least one parent to be an active member of the church.
How does the United Methodist Church baptize someone?
The United Methodist Church celebrates three modes of Baptism: immersion, pouring or sprinkling. All baptisms are done with the three-part blessing – in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. At UMCSO, we baptize by sprinkling during the service.
Can we have a private family baptism not at the church?
Because baptism is a community act and celebration, this is normally discouraged. Under some extenuating circumstances, the pastor may agree to such a request.
Funerals:
Can I have a funeral in the church at Shrub Oak if I am not a member?
Yes. Please contact the church office and the Pastor will meet with you.
