As part of our mission to serve in the community around us, we engage in the following activities year-round. If you feel called to join us or would like more information, contact us.
- Crafts for a Cause
Every Friday morning from 10:00 to noon, you’ll find a group of people knitting and crocheting and having a nice visit together. These ladies make many items including prayer shawls, baby blankets and hats, stuffed toys and children’s clothing. All of these items are donated to people in need. If you have an interest in this type of craft, please join the group any Friday morning. If you have more questions, please see Maxine Haigh.
- Visitation Ministry
Pastor Iwy does a wonderful job of visiting those of our church family who are sick or shut in. There are a few others from the church too that may go with her or go separately to visit those who are unable to come to church or are in the hospital. These visits are always heartwarming; not only for those who are unable to come out, but also for those who visit. If you would like to serve in this visitation ministry, please see Marilyn Bucher.
- Hospital Chaplains
If you enjoy visitation, another volunteer activity that some of our UMCSO members do is act as hospital chaplains at the New York Presbyterian/Hudson Valley Hospital in Peekskill, N.Y. If you have an interest in this important effort, talk to Lynne Schrot about it.
- Cancer Society Drivers
Members of our church serve as volunteer drivers for the American Cancer Society, driving cancer patients for treatment. Many cancer patients today undergo a regimen of extended radiation or chemotherapy from home, requiring frequent trips to treatment centers. They often don’t have family members or others able to drive them, and especially in Putnam County there is little in the way of public transportation for them to use. Volunteer drivers pick these patients up at their homes and transport them to and from their treatment. This program is coordinated by the American Cancer Society, who normally schedule drivers for one trip a week. For more information contact Cliff Cullum.
In addition to the above there are always opportunities to serve in a variety of ways. The following is a partial list. If any of them interest you, speak to the people listed or contact us for more information.
- Sunday School Teachers
UMCSO has a wonderful Sunday School program with dedicated teachers who have been teaching for many years. We are always looking for new teachers or substitutes who can pitch in as needed. Our Sunday school is led by a team. If you can serve in this vital area, please contact Patty Robcke or Lynne Schrot.
- Worship Service Liturgist
Liturgists participate in the Worship service by reading the Scripture and Gospel selections and dedicate the offering as it is to be received. Scripture readings and the offering dedication are provided by Pastor Iwy to the Liturgist ahead of time. If you would like to serve in this way, please contact Pastor Iwy.
Our ushers are primarily responsible for taking the offering from the congregants and bringing it forward to the altar. Training on how to do this is provided by our Worship committee. If you are interested in being an usher at UMCSO, please contact Pat Golanec.
As Acolytes, children bring the light of Christ into the service and light the altar candles at the beginning of the service. At the end of the service, the acolytes go forward again and light their taper from the altar candles, extinguish the candles and then take the light out into the world. Training on this important role is provided. Patty Scozzari is the person to see if you have a child who would like to participate in this program.
- Green Team
Many of the men from UMCSO gather together on Friday mornings during the warmer weather and take care of the church grounds by mowing the grass, weeding the gardens and trimming the grounds as needed. These wonderful men then enjoy time together over lunch before going to their homes. Don Hoffmann is the contact person for the Green Team. I’m sure he’d love to hear from you if you would like to serve.
Our choir is led by Rob Gutowski, a wonderful musician, who takes great joy in leading the choir and other musical events at UMCSO. The choir sings most every Sunday except during the summer months. Rehearsal is before and after Worship. Please contact Rob if you are interested in the choir or any musical program for the church.
- A/V Equipment
UMCSO was blessed last year with the installation of a new audio visual system. There are a few people who manage the process of showing the slides and controlling sound during the service Sunday mornings, but they welcome others who would like to learn this easy process to help out from time to time. If you would like to help out in this capacity, contact Cliff Cullum.
