Hurricane Harvey Response
After all the flooding in Texas, our HUB** is called to start collecting items again for UMCOR*. At this time the greatest need is for flood buckets. Our HUB has 34 buckets ready to go, but the need is far greater. These supplies enable people to begin the overwhelming job of cleaning up after a flood or hurricane. The most important part of this whole thing is that we can help.
We will collect items for flood buckets and have them available for distribution to Texas as soon as possible. We have 72 empty buckets ready to be filled. At this time our church will be collecting 4 items towards the buckets. Our goal is to collect enough for 50 more buckets.
clothespins – 50 per bucket
clotheslines – two 50 ft or one 100 ft cotton, nylon or plastic
dust masks – 5 per bucket
kitchen gloves – 2 pair per bucket
Monetary contributions are always useful. A check made out to The United Methodist Church at Shrub Oak, with UMCOR-Harvey written in the memo line will assure that 100% of the money is directed toward Harvey relief.
Thank you for sharing and caring!

When we give our lives to Jesus Christ, we are called to a life of service. Jesus himself taught this in John 13 when, after washing his disciples’ feet, he returned to his place and said,
“Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. (John 13:12b-17 NIV)
At Shrub Oak UMC we offer many opportunities for you to serve, both within and outside the church. These pages contain a list of upcoming special opportunities along with ongoing ways to serve. While these opportunities are meant primarily for our members, we invite anyone with a heart for our Lord who feels called to join in to contact us to discuss taking part in these activities.
Every child of God is filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, specially gifted to play a unique and valued role in the body of Christ. No one is without gift or purpose.
Spiritual gifts are not our talents or skills. They are the grace of God at work within us, empowering us to match our deep passions with the world’s deep need. The gifts are given to individuals, but they are given to build and strengthen community and to meet the needs of those around us.
Begin the journey. Discover your gifts. Talk about your gifts with others. Strive together to understand your gifts and how you can use them to serve God, neighbor, and world. You have been gifted. You have been given a purpose.

And remember, even if you can’t go on a mission trip or take a direct role in helping others, you can always pray for those who do. They need and welcome your prayers!
